Harvard Medical School

Speakers of the conference, 2013

 Hervert-Benson              Herbert-Benson-new
Herbert Benson, M.D.

Theme: Mind-Body-Vitality

In 1975, Dr. Benson wrote a remarkable book called The Relaxation Response,
articulating the biomedical antidote to stress. He later founded the Mind/Body Medical Institute which became the pioneer in researching and advocating treatment that works with the human mind and body. Today if we go to the doctor due to stress (and 60-90% of all medical visits are stress related), we’ve been affected by Benson’s work, and a simple, powerful idea: Just as we have a stress response, we have a relaxation response.

Dr. Benson is the Director Emeritus of the Benson-Henry Institute (BHI)at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Professor of Medicine, Harvard
Medical School. A graduate of Wesleyan University and the Harvard Medical School, Dr. Benson is the author or co-author of more than 190 scientific publications and 12 books. Dr. Benson is a pioneer in mind/body medicine, one of the first Western physicians to bring spirituality and healing into medicine. In his 40+ year career, he has defined the relaxation response and continues to lead teaching and research into its efficacy in counteracting the harmful effects of stress. The recipient of numerous national and international awards, Dr. Benson lectures widely about mind/body medicine and the BHI's work. His expertise is frequently sought by national and international news media, and he appears in scores of newspapers, magazines, and television programs each year. Dr. Benson's research extends from the laboratory to the clinic to Asian field expeditions. His work serves as a bridge between medicine and religion, East and West, mind and body, and belief and science.

 Daniel-Shapiro                 Daniel-Shapiro
Daniel L. Shapiro, Ph.D.

Theme: The power of Diplomatic Emotion

You negotiate every day – and whether you are trying to negotiate a deal or dispute, emotions inevitably affect your success. It is all too easy to get stuck in the emotional messiness of the situation.  Distrust, fear, and anger can make you less inclined to resolve the conflict in a productive way. And you may miss opportunities to draw on the power of positive emotions to improve your relationship and your negotiation results.
Dr.Shapiro is Founder and Director of the Harvard International Negotiation Program. He also is Assistant Professor in Psychology at Harvard Medical School/McLean Hospital and affiliated faculty at Harvard Law School’s Program on Negotiation, where he serves as Associate Director of the Harvard Negotiation Project. Dr. Shapiro has contributed to a wide array of scholarly journals and books, including Beyond Reason: Using Emotions as You Negotiate (with Roger Fisher). For three years, he chaired the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Conflict Prevention, a multi-stakeholder group of former heads of state, eminent academics, and practitioners working together to establish global priorities on conflict resolution. During that time, he launched development of a Global Curriculum on Conflict Management for senior-level policymakers. Dr. Shapiro is the recipient of numerous awards, including the American Psychological Association’s “Early Career Award” and the Cloke-Millen “Peacemaker of the Year” award.
